Mr. Gopal Basnet
Bestowed with tremendous hydropower potential, supply of Electricity in Nepal seems to be insufficient & unreliable, keeping in view of demand. Approximately 50 percent of the population has access to electricity, and only 5 percent of the rural populace has access to electricity from the National grid. Even residents in Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu experience load shedding several times a day for up to 16 hours during the dry season. Similarly, there is shortage of power during winter and spill in wet season. This imbalance has clearly shown the need for storage projects. Currently, Kulekhani I and II (92 MW) are the only storage projects connected to the National grid. Hence, the Government of Nepal has decided to expedite the construction of storage-based hydropower projects in an effort to bridge the growing demand-supply gap in the Nation's power sector. Keeping this in view, especially for peaking, the Government of Nepal has decided to develop the Budhi Gandaki Storage Hydropower Project(1200 MW) located at about 1.50 Km upstream from the confluence of Trishuli and Budhi Gandaki River, in the boarder of Gorkha and Dhading district along Budhi Gandaki River, a tributary of the Trishuli River, Gandaki Basin through Development Committee. Further, the Government of Nepal has declared this project as of National Pride.
Since the formation, the Project Development Committee has been working on to develop the project with the view of integrating it with other development activities like tourism development, water use for irrigation, drinking water, sanitation & recreation including urban development in the project connected areas. In this context this hydroelectric project would be a tool that contributes further development to fulfill the desire of people by means of promoting sustainable livelihood of the surrounding community, economic development of the region and the Nation as a whole.
At present, Feasibility study and Detail Engineering Design of the Project is under progress. So far, draft final feasibility study report has been prepared. The Final Report on the same shall be prepared by July - 2015. Thereafter preparatory works for the development of this project shall be carried out. The preparatory works are mainly construction of approach road up to proposed dam and power house site, construction of bridge on Budhi Gandaki River, construction of office buildings, camp facilities, diversion tunnels etc. Similarly various activities related to Resettlement and Rehabilitation shall also be carried out in parallel.
In addition procurement of land for office building and camp facilities nearby project site including the construction of office building is to be completed by this fiscal year 2071/72. For this purpose it is requested to all the political parties, concerned stakeholders, and local people including concerned Government institutions to extend their co-operation & required supports towards the successful completion of this project of National pride.
